The Big Education Conversation supports communities to get together to talk about what education means, what it is really for, and how changes to education systems can be made. Using open source tools and resources, Big Education Conversations (BECs) can happen anytime, anywhere, and can be added to the global map to show how the global conversation is growing.

Conversations like this are important for reimagining the purpose of education and identifying ways to transform it together. In conversations, different groups of students, families, educators, and government leaders come together and share their beliefs and hopes, and commit to taking steps to change education for the better. Through Big Education Conversations anyone can contribute to a shared purpose and vision for education.

A Big Education Conversation is distinctive because it:

Is intergenerational
Involves different stakeholders, i.e. parents/caregivers, educators, youth and students, government leaders, and adults from the community
Starts with a discussion focused on beliefs about the purpose of education
Invites people to reimagine education, identifying small steps to take individually or collectively to change education for the better

Developed in the UK, the Big Education Conversation was initially brought to life by Big Change - a charity that wants to help create a society where every child can thrive. The Big Education Conversation also builds on the Center for Universal Education at Brookings’ global research on the purpose of education and its Conversation Starter Tools which are used across numerous countries from the Americas to Africa to Asia and Australia.

In 2022, Big Change, The Center for Universal Education at Brookings, and the Lego Foundation, worked together to create a platform and open-source resources to support Big Education Conversations to happen all around the world. The initiative was formally launched at the UN Transforming Education Summit. Today, organisations in countries across the globe are working to lead Big Education Conversations in their communities and countries.
